What to Expect…
What to Expect At Your Appointments
Our midwives will be available for extra support throughout your pregnancy and postnatal period. One of our midwives will visit you on the postnatal ward and then check in on you again within your first six weeks; this is an opportunity to discuss your birth, emotions, and any questions you may have.
During this time, you will also have the chance to repeat the mental health assessments completed during your pregnancy; again, these results will be discussed with you, and opportunities for additional support plans will be offered.
During your appointments, our caring midwife will:
❋ Discuss
Ask you about your overall health, emotional wellbeing, family history, and any details about your current or previous pregnancies (As applicable).
❋ Review
Discuss the results of mental health assessments (emailed/completed prior) - EPDS & DASS-21.
❋ Listen
Listen to and explore any concerns or stresses you may be experiencing. Take the time to get to know you better and provide space for you to ask any questions you may have.
❋ Support
Work with you to identify your emotional and support needs, prioritise your care, create a support plan for you and your family, including your pregnancy, birth and postnatal period, and if needed communicate with your specialist care team to arrange any referrals or additional support.
With your permission, communicate with your Obstetrician to ensure the best continuity of care throughout your pregnancy.
Confidentiality
Your privacy and trust are incredibly important to us, so everything discussed during your appointment will remain confidential. We want you to feel comfortable sharing openly, knowing that your personal information is protected. Sometimes, during our conversations, certain topics may arise that require follow-up with your Obstetrician or other healthcare professionals. If that happens, we’ll make sure you’re informed every step of the way, so you’re always aware of what’s happening.
Please remember that your GP is also a valuable resource, especially if you find some days harder than others. If you need additional support, they are there to help with physical and mental health.
We're here to support you, and we’ll always work together to provide the continuity of care you need.
This may include suggestions or referrals to the Gidget Foundation Australia or another health professional or service. We always work with your Obstetrician or care provider (their role is to continue supporting you), and we will work together to ensure the best outcome for you and your baby during your pregnancy.
